Peter Parker and Miles Morales face some deadly villains in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Each of them are classic bad guys from the comics, with a modern twist to make them interesting. They’re vicious and a massive challenge for the Spideys in their latest adventure.
And yet, not all the villains are on an equal playing field. Which of these villains that appear in Spider-Man 2 are the best ones? Time to tackle this troublesome list of Spider-Man’s biggest baddies (without spoiling too much).
Here are the best villains who appear in Spider-Man 2, ranked!
10) The Flame (Cletus Cassidy)
One of the biggest Easter eggs in Spider-Man is the inclusion of Cletus Cassidy. He is the man who will go on to become Carnage, the spawn of Venom in the comics. However, Cletus doesn’t do much in Spider-Man 2 and only appears as part of a cult during side missions for The Flame. The cult is going around branding and recruiting people for their nefarious cause, which leads to some big problems for Spider-Man and New York City.
The ending of the side quests reveals some big revelations, but as far as Cletus’ impact on the story of Spider-Man 2, it’s pretty minimal. Hence, he appears at the bottom of this list. We’ll see what happens in the future if there’s a threequel.
9) The Chameleon
While there are some very big connections to the main villain, the Chameleon is another villain with little influence on the events of Spider-Man 2. Although Chameleon appears in a brief scene, you don’t get to fight him. Spidey gets to feel his presence as you visit an apartment with some haunting indications that may come in the near future.
The Chameleon is able to change his appearance into just about anyone. In the comics, his real name is Dimitri and he has an ongoing feud with Kraven the Hunter.
8) Mister Negative (Martin Li)
The first Spider-Man game from Insomniac featured Mister Negative as the main villain. His powers include energy attacks and increased strength, which were hard to deal with. However, in Spider-Man 2, Martin Li is feeling the repercussions and remorse for his actions.
Although still a foe at first, Martin Li eventually is able to assist Peter Parker and Miles Morales in various ways. He’s still a powerful enemy but ends up being very useful to Spider-Man when an even greater threat arrives in New York.
7) Scream
With part of the story of Spider-Man 2 revolving around the black symbiote, it’s no surprise to see other symbiote characters appear—but not in the way you may be expecting. The character Scream is a perfect example of this, who you fight in a very shocking way for a brief time.
In Marvel Comics, Scream is a symbiote character that is one of five different symbiotes that spawned from the Venom symbiote. The original host for Scream was a character named Donna Diego, but things have changed in Spider-Man 2. We won’t spoil who it is, but the reveal is a major cause for concern for Peter Parker.
6) The Scorpion (Mac Gargan)
In the original Marvel’s Spider-Man, the Scorpion was one of the major villains that squared up with Spider-Man in the climactic battle. But that wasn’t the end of Mac Gargan causing trouble. In Spider-Man 2, the Scorpion appears once again to do battle with Peter and Miles as things get crazy with the Hunters in New York.
The Scorpion has a suit that is high-tech, giving him increased strength and a deadly tail that can be poisonous. While he is more than capable of fighting Spider-Man directly, he becomes an even bigger threat when grouped with other villains. In the comics, Scorpion is one of the original members of the Sinister Six who fight Spider-Man frequently.
5) The Sandman (Flint Marko)
Flint Marko is the first villain we see Peter and Miles battle at the start of Spider-Man 2. Unfortunately, the Sandman is a problem for a short time for the two Spider-Men and never makes an appearance again afterward.
There are the crystal structures you can find throughout the map with fights against sand enemies, but Flint isn’t around for them.
The Sandman has powers tied exactly to what his namesake is. He can change forms to his body, becoming as large as a skyscraper or as small as grains of sand. In Spider-Man 2, Peter and Miles need to figure out how to bring a giant-sized Sandman down before he covers New York City in sand dunes. In the comics, Spider-Man has had numerous battles against the Sandman, often leading to some crazy moments between the two.
4) The Lizard (Curt Connors)
Peter Parker’s relationship with Curt Connors is a tumultuous one. But not because he hates Spider-Man or is a bad person at heart. Although he is mentioned in the first Spider-Man game and makes an appearance in human form in Spider-Man: Miles Morales, he finally shows up as The Lizard in Spider-Man 2.
The Lizard is the alter ego of the good doctor as a result of experiments to repair his damaged arm. He is a vicious and deadly enemy that can ravage Spider-Man in many ways. When he finally changes form, Lizard goes on a rampage that has Miles and Peter chasing him through New York City, while Kraven’s thugs also go after them.
3) Mysterio (Quentin Beck)
Known as the master of illusions, Mysterio makes his presence known in Spider-Man 2 in a very creative way. There are Mysterium attractions that are found throughout the city, where Spider-Man can face a challenge laid out by the villainous illusionist. But as his name implies, nothing is as it seems.
Mysterio can create illusions to mess with the minds of his enemies. In the Mysterium challenges, you’ll see him create mirages that play with the scale of objects and locations. With Spider-Man in the comics, Mysterio is constantly switching things up and causing Spidey all kinds of problems with severe consequences.
2) Kraven the Hunter (Sergei Kravinoff)
One of the main villains of Spider-Man 2 is a master hunter with a chip on his shoulder. In search of a worthy challenge and prey, Kraven the Hunter is one of Spider-Man’s most vicious enemies. Not only does he have an army with him in Spider-Man 2, but he also has the resources to be a major problem for New York City.
Kraven has some big connections to other villains who appear in Spider-Man 2, with a few shocking revelations. Although his true motivations are a mystery at first, it’s made abundantly clear he wants to battle Spider-Man in the most basic and primal way imaginable.
1) Venom
Arguably the deadliest villain in Spider-Man’s rogues gallery, Venom is the greatest threat in Spider-Man 2. His powers come from an alien symbiote that originated from a meteor that landed on Earth. While the symbiote bonded with Spider-Man for a time, it eventually finds a new host and becomes the monster known as Venom.
While the comics have an iconic story many Spider-Man fans know and love, the plot of Spider-Man 2 mixes things up. Venom is incredibly powerful and poses a massive threat to New York, and the world as a whole. But what makes this version of Venom interesting is who is behind the symbiote mask. Add in the voice of iconic horror actor Tony Todd, and you have one of the most terrifying versions of Venom to date.
