Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has officially become the best selling game on the Nintendo Switch in Japan over the past few days, overtaking the impressive sales numbers of Splatoon 2 in just four months.
Ultimate has sold over 21,000 copies this week, bringing its total physical game sales in Japan to 2,974,153. Splatoon 2’s total sales are currently at 2,970,723 after nearly two years on the market. The digital sales for both titles aren’t disclosed.
With its current sales figures, Ultimate is on course to become the first Switch game to sell over three million units in Japan—and as soon as potentially next week. It could even reach the four million physical sales figure later in the year when the game’s second DLC character, Joker from Persona 5, launches in April.
Four more characters are also expected to release sometime over the course of the year to bolster the game’s ever-growing roster—10 more DLC characters in total are reportedly on the way.
The news is just a further reminder of the dominance that Ultimate and the Switch are having in Japan, with the Switch making up 12 of the 20 best selling games this week. The Switch console has been selling nearly double the amount of PS4s weekly.
