PUBG’s new maps are still “many months” away

Early access development is a long, winding road.

Earlier this month, Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Green offered an early look at a brand-new desert map coming to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Now we know just how early that look was, thanks to an interview with EuroGamer.

In the interview, Greene expanded on the teaser pictures he posted on Twitter, basically saying that they were carefully selected from a map that is largely incomplete.

“We’re going to be doing a blog post on this some time in the near future but what people saw in that is what is called “a beautiful corner,” an area of the map made to show the art director the overall feel the team want to give the map,” said Greene. “You know, I saw it and was just like, “that’s cool! Oh man.”

Along with the desert map, Greene and the team at Bluehole are working on at least one more map that features snow and cosmodrome and is based in the Adriatic region. But they won’t be finished for some time.

“We’re going to explain these maps are still in early development and we’re still working on two at the moment,” he said. “We’re trying to pick one to focus on. But it’s still going to take us many months to get it out. I mean maps are not an easy thing to do, the last map took us about six to nine months to get to a really playable state. Maps take time. But we’re going to be working hard and we’re expanding the team so there’s no ETA, they’ll come when they’re ready.”

While new maps may be further away that some may have originally thought, next week’s update will add first person-only servers and new customization items, so there’s still plenty to be excited about in the world of PUBG.

The game will also get its first real taste of esports in its first ever LAN event at gamescom in Cologne, Germany, at the end of August.
