The Horse Guai (also called Ma Tianba) is one of your unlikely allies in Black Myth: Wukong. You can encounter him in five different locations, with your search running parallel to his.

Ma Tianba appears in set locations, quickly becoming a common (and anticipated) sight on the Destined One’s road. You likely must talk to the Horse Guai in a chapter for him to appear in the following one. The questline ends fairly early into Chapter Five, after you’ve taken down a story boss, so make sure to talk to him in all other locations before then.

Here’s where we’ve found Ma Tianba in Black Myth: Wukong.

Horse Guai (Ma Tianba) location in Chapter One: Back Hills

From the Back Hills Shrine in Bamboo Grove, head down the steps and look left as soon as you reach the pillar to find the entrance to a small chamber. This is your first encounter with the Horse Guai, who’s on a log on the right side of the area. Don’t miss the meditation spot right in front of the door.

Horse Guai (Ma Tianba) location in Chapter Two: The outskirts of Sandgate Village

Our equine acquaintance is in a bind, but don’t worry about it: He’s got it.

Teleport to the Valley of Despair in Sandgate Village and go up the stairs on the right. Look for a house with a rope bridge on top of it, then go through the weak barrier below the roof. This leads you to an area with the Earth Wolf boss, but our friendly Horse Guai will be tied to a pillar in the nearby shrine. This area is also the final location for the Old Rattle Drum quest, so you can kill three birds with one stone.

Alternatively, you can reach this spot through the Village Entrance waypoint.

Chapter Three Horse Guai (Ma Tianba) location

From the Temple Entrance, head past the first altar and go up the stairs leading to the left side. Just ahead, go down another set of stairs on your left, leading you to a house with a few blind monks in it. Once you get out on the upper level, make another left to spot our equine companion hanging out by a pillar.

Chapter Four Horse Guai (Ma Tianba) location

Make sure to talk to the Horse in Chapter Four before reaching him in Chapter Five, since the storyline may advance then.

From the Webbed Hollow Shrine, drop from a ledge on your right into a corridor filled with cocoons. Head until you reach the arena with the Centipede Guai fight, then go through the torchlit passage in the wall. Keep following the path until you come out in an area with an exceptionally large, talking cocoon. I wonder what’s inside.

Chapter Five Horse Guai (Ma Tianba) location

The Horse Guai is located in the Valley Entrance in the Furnace Valley zone, and this time, he’s in a pickle. Well, was.

From the spawn location, follow the path in front of you, dodging the enemies along the way. Make a right just before the gate, leading you into the pools of lava. Ignore the worms and rush through until you spot a cart with a winged guai in front of it. Clear the area, then pull the string to talk to our friend. If he says he can’t rest, come back after defeating the Keeper of Flaming Mountains story boss.

Horse Guai (Ma Tianba) side quest rewards

Interacting with the Horse Guai in all five spots rewards you with the Dark Thunder transformation, which lets you turn into our equine friend and use his power against your foes. Though Ma Tianba’s story didn’t quite end how we expected it to, we could at least help the Horse Guai in an important moment for his character.
