Group play at the MLG Finals will follow a structure often used by UMG, featuring 4 pools with 4 teams each. As stated previously, 12 of the qualifying teams are from North America, 3 from Europe, and 1 from Australia. Out of the open bracket, the 4 remaining undefeated teams will be placed into a group. At the end of group play comes the double elimination playoff, and the top 4 teams from the open loser’s bracket will enter directly into the loser’s side of the bracket along with the poor performing teams from group play.

On the eSports Report, members of MLG chose the group play pools lottery-style after placing each team into a tier based on pro points seeding. The 4th tier was reserved for the international teams. With 4 tiers, 1 team was chosen from each to create a group.
