Like many free-to-play games, Apex Legends’ currency system can be somewhat complex for newcomers. There are three main currencies in Apex, each of which is used for different items and purposes.
The three currencies are crafting metals, which unlock cosmetic items from the Legend menu; Legend Tokens, which unlock characters and a handful of other items; and Apex Coins, the game’s premium currency that can be used to purchase the battle pass and other store cosmetics. (There are also Heirloom Shards and event-specific currencies, but those are rarer.)
Of the three main currencies, Legend Tokens are the easiest to come by—depending on your definition of “easy,” of course. You’ll need them if you want to unlock new characters when they’re released at the beginning of each season, store-exclusive weapon and character skins that are recolors of other skins, and rerolls of daily challenges.
Here’s everything you need to know about Legend Tokens in Apex.
How to get Legend Tokens in Apex Legends
Starting from level four and extending onward, Apex players earn 600 Legend Tokens every time they level up. This used to continue even if you hit the game’s old level cap of 500; while you wouldn’t gain any levels, you would continue gaining 600 Legend Tokens each time you filled the XP bar. The level cap was increased considerably in season 14, allowing players to increase their level beyond 500.
Leveling up is the only way to obtain Legend Tokens in Apex; they can’t be purchased or unlocked any other way. This means that the more you play the game and level up, the more Legend Tokens you’ll earn. Legend Tokens are used in a few different parts of the game, so it’s important to make sure you budget them well.
If you’re looking to earn more Legend Tokens, you’ll need to look for ways to increase your overall XP gain while playing Apex. As a rule of thumb, getting more takedowns and kills will yield you more experience from each match. You can also invite your friends to your squad, each of which will grant you a five percent XP bonus. XP bonuses are also granted regularly on the premium battle pass; these bonuses will indirectly increase the amount of Legend Tokens you’ll receive for playing.
Weekly challenges are another decent source of XP, but some of them may require you to step out of your comfort zone and play different legends or try different modes. They generally take longer than daily quests, hence the increased time given to complete them. They can’t be rerolled, so you’ll need to power through them if you want the XP and the battle pass stars they offer. Weekly quests will secure you 25,000 XP points by themselves each week.
What are Legend Tokens good for?
Legend Tokens are used primarily to unlock new characters. While a handful of legends are unlocked for free in the base game, if you want to play as the latest legend or any of the newer ones, you’ll need to unlock them with Legend Tokens. Legends cost 12,000 Legend Tokens each (or 750 Apex Coins, if you’d rather use premium currency). Once you’ve spent the Tokens, you don’t need to do it again—the legend in question is yours permanently.
Legend Tokens can also be used to unlock recolors of certain legendary character skins and weapon skins. Occasionally, Apex developer Respawn will offer recolors in the in-game store. These can only be purchased with Legend Tokens, and you’ll need to own the base skin already. The skins available rotate every few days, so be sure to check back if you don’t see anything you like. Weapon skin recolors cost 6,500 Legend Tokens, while character skin recolors cost 10,500 Legend Tokens.
Finally, Legend Tokens can be used to reroll daily challenges. Daily challenges can be completed to earn battle pass stars, which are used to level up your battle pass. If you receive a challenge you don’t want to complete or one that involves a legend you don’t own, you can reroll it using Legend Tokens to get a new challenge. Your first reroll each day on any of the challenges is free; after that, you’ll need to pay 200 Tokens for your second reroll, 500 for your third reroll, and 1,000 for your fourth reroll and all subsequent rerolls. Some challenges allow you to choose whether you want a battle royale-focused challenge or an Arenas challenge.
Legendary skin recolors | 6,500 or 10,500 Legend Tokens |
Legends | 12,000 Legend Tokens |
First daily challenge reroll | Free |
Second daily challenge reroll | 200 Legend Tokens |
Third daily challenge reroll | 500 Legend Tokens |
Fourth or more daily challenge reroll | 1,000 Legend Tokens |
If you’re looking to get the most out of your Legend Tokens, save a handful for new legends and unexpected recolors of your favorite character and weapon skins; those are the two most valuable in-game items that Legend Tokens unlock. Once you unlock all of the game’s legends, you should be able to save enough Tokens to unlock the next new legend at the start of the next season. If you play your cards right, you may never have to use premium currency to unlock a new legend.
