Gen.G kept their first place hopes alive with an unbelievably close 2-0 victory against the LCK’s top team, Griffin.
Gen.G hit a roadblock on Tuesday after an 0-2 loss against KT Rolster. But they were given a chance to make up for their misstep tonight against the team they’ve spent the entire Summer Split trying to catch up to—Griffin.
Gen.G made sure to make full use of this opportunity, starting the series with a dominant game one victory. Gen.G drafted a composition with lane bullies in order to counter Griffin’s jungle Kindred pick. Without any pushing lanes, Griffin jungler Lee “Tarzan” Seung-yong struggled to secure his target marks within Gen.G’s jungle.
Griffin were unable to secure any leads during the laning phase. With a set of champions which needed time and gold to hit their power spikes they were near powerless to quell Gen.G’s aggression.
While game one was a good demonstration of Gen.G playing to their win conditions, game two was when tonight’s fun really began.
Griffin were able to get their Kindred composition running after their previous failure and had almost full control over Summoner’s Rift, and everything within the map—including Gen.G.
Gen.G’s only saving grace for the first 20 minutes of game two was their top laner, Lee “CuVee” Seong-jin. CuVee kept Gen.G from being aced on multiple occasions with his disengage play on Gnar.
But thanks to an engage mistake by Griffin, Gen.G were able to make a comeback. A comeback which gave Gen.G every single one of Griffin’s turrets. Just as Gen.G found their lead through a teamfight however, they then lost the lead in a similar fashion by the Elder Drake.
Seconds away from their Nexus being destroyed, Gen.G made an incredible last stand once their players respawned. This last stand not only saved Gen.G’s Nexus, which was two auto attacks from being destroyed, but resulted in an ace. That allowed Gen.G to end the match.
Back to being only two points behind Griffin in the standings, Gen.G will continue their quest for first place on July 29 against SK Telecom T1.
