While the new consoles have been tough for many gamers to get their hands on, Microsoft and Sony have done a lot with their new hardware to impress fans and drive demand. Along with 4K gaming, the new gaming consoles can reach up to 120fps in certain games, helping bridge the gap between console and PC performance.

To set up your Xbox Series X/S to allow for 120fps gaming, start at the home Xbox dashboard and follow these steps:

  1. Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the system guide.
  2. Navigate to Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates.
  3. Select Update console and apply the necessary updates.
  4. Go back to the system guide to change your console display settings.
  5. Choose Profile & system > Settings > General > TV & display options.
  6. Select 120 Hz for the Refresh rate.
  7. Lastly, enable FPS boost by going to My games & apps.
  8. Choose a game then select Menu > Manage game & add-ons > Compatibility options.
  9. Enable FPS boost.

It is also important to note that native HDR games with an FPS boost enabled to 120fps need to have HDR disabled if your resolution in the video settings is less than 4K as set.

This is all you need to set your Xbox Series X to 120Hz to allow for 120fps gaming. Similarly, you can also enable playing at 120fps on a PS5. Of course, you will need a compatible TV or monitor that supports at least a 120 Hz refresh rate. You can check out the best 4k gaming monitors to start.

Generally, a TV or monitor with an HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 port is needed to begin with. If you plug the HDMI 2.1 cable the Xbox Series X comes with into a screen with an HDMI 2.0 port, you will only be able to game at a maximum resolution of 1440p at 120fps. With an HDMI 2.1 port, this will allow for 4K gaming up to 120fps in Xbox games that support it.

Hi! I'm Iya, and I either play games for a few hours in a week, or several in a day- there just no in-between. It all relies on whether I discovered a narrative-heavy game that I'm itching to see how it all plays out in the end, or if I do decide to finally get a life and prefer to dabble in casual games before I find my next obsession.
