After spending the 2018 League of Legends season helping various LCS teams, Weldon Green has found a permanent home in Los Angeles as CLG’s new head coach, the organization announced earlier today.
“My goal for CLG is to first and foremost retake the title,” Weldon said. “I think this is the primary goal, one step and one foot in front of the other. I’m excited to be here at CLG and just want to let our fans know: The faithful shall be rewarded.”
This is a return home of sorts for Weldon—CLG was the first team he worked with beginning in the 2015 Summer Split. With Weldon’s help three years ago, CLG were able to capture their first NA LCS title, as well as a spot in that year’s World Championship.
Following his time with CLG, Weldon went on to work with various different teams, winning LCS titles with both TSM and G2 Esports. Prior to joining CLG as their head coach, Weldon spent the final weeks of the 2018 Summer Split helping TSM during the NA LCS playoffs and regional qualifier.
“I could not be more excited to have Weldon as the Head Coach of the LCS team,” said CLG’s director of esports, Matt ‘Trinitiii” Nausha. “Not only does he come with a wealth of experience, he is very aligned with the vision and direction for CLG.”
CLG ended the 2018 NA LCS Summer Split in eighth place, failing to qualify for the playoffs. Halfway through the summer, CLG parted ways with their previous head coach, Tony “Zikz” Gray. Following his departure from CLG, Zikz has since joined TSM as their new head coach.
Today’s announcement marks CLG’s first publicized signing for the upcoming 2019 season. It’s unknown at this time if CLG plan to make any roster changes.
