One gamer couldn’t believe his luck when one of the holy grails of gaming history arrived at his doorstep.
A reddit user stumbled across a treasure trove of Blizzard goodies on eBay, and he immediately bought it up. Unbeknownst to him, it included a long-lost gem that Blizzard were desperate to retrieve: a gold disc containing the master source code for the original StarCraft video game, released back in 1998.
Khemist49 was stunned and rushed to reddit to ask others what is was and what he should do with it. He was greeted with an onslaught of messages asking him to upload the data online so dataminers and others could use the source code to their leisure. Collectors also reached out to him looking to buy the item for up to $2,000.
In the end though, Khemist49 was contacted by one of Blizzard’s lawyers who kindly asked for the disc back.
A few days later, Khemist49 received a Blizzard-themed reward to thank him for the deed, as well as a literal loot chest of Blizzard goodies and an all-expenses paid trip to Blizzcon. Not bad.
