Should you evolve Cosmoem into Solgaleo or Lunala in Pokémon Go?

Nebby? Not anymore.

Cosmoem is known as the Protostar Pokémon. It evolves from Cosmog, better known as Nebby, from Pokémon Sun and Moon. It’s a powerful legendary Pysychic-type Pokémon that is capable of evolving into two other legendaries: Solgaleo and Lunala, the poster Pokémon in Sun and Moon.

Here’s everything you need to know about which Cosmoem evolution is better in Pokémon Go.

Who is Cosmoem in Pokémon GO?

In the main series games, Cosmoem evolves into Solgaleo if leveled up in Sun and Lunala if leveled up in Moon. In Pokémon GO, evolutions work a little differently. Since there aren’t two versions of the game, you’ll have to pay attention to the time of day you evolve Cosmoem and use your accrued Cosmog Candies to choose your favorite form.

How to got Cosmog in Pokémon GO?

To get Cosmog, you’ll need to complete the Special Research called ‘A Cosmic Companion.’ This means you’ll only be able to choose Solgaleo or Lunala. This event started on September 1st, 2022 and ended on December 1st, 2022. It can no longer be accessed. However, here are some more ways to possibly score a Cosmog in Pokémon GO:

  • You’ll always be able to trade with a friend
  • Cross your fingers for future Cosmog events

Sadly, unless a new event comes to Pokémon GO, you’ll only be able to get one Cosmog at the moment.

How to evolve Cosmoem in into Solgaleo or Lunala

the Pokémon Cosmoem

To evolve Cosmoem in Pokémon GO, you need to spend 100 candies. Cosmoem can evolve in Pokémon GO into Solgaleo and Lunala but there are certain terms to each evolution and they are listed here.

  • To evolve Solgaleo in Pokémon GO you have to evolve Cosmoem during the day.
  • To evolve Lunala in Pokémon GO, you have to evolve Cosmoem during the night.

Solgaleo traits in Pokémon GO

In Pokémon GO, Solgaleo is a Psychic and Steel-type Pokémon making for a tanky, offensive powerhouse of a Pokémon.

Type Psychic and Steel-type
Base Stamina Rate264
Base Attack Rate255
Base Defense Rate191
Tip:

Fairy can be a pretty tricky type to fight, and Solgaleo’s Steel typing can help a lot with troublesome Fairies.

As you might expect, Solgaleo learns more Fire-type moves thanks to its association with the sun. Solgaleo can learn:

Fast AttacksCharged Attacks
Fire SpinFlamethrower
Zen HeadbuttIron Head
Psychic Fangs
Solar Beam

With its unique Psychic/Steel typing, Solgaleo can act a little bit like a wild card in battles. That Steel type makes it completely immune to Poison and offers resistances to Normal, Grass, Ice, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Dragon, Steel, and Fairy-type attacks. Tragically, as a Steel type, it’s weak to Fire, which makes it a bit ironic that it’s supposed to be the “Sunne Pokémon.”

Lunala traits in Pokémon GO

Lunala is a Psychic and Ghost-type Pokémon and shares a bit more similarity to Solgaleo this time.

TypePsychic and Ghost-type
Base Stamina Rate264
Base Attack Rate255
Base Defense Rate191
Tip:

Lunala’s limited weaknesses and strong base attack make it a great choice for completing raids.

Lunala favors Psychic, Ghost, and Fairy-type attacks related to the moon.

Fast AttacksCharged Attacks
Air Slash Future Sight
Confusion Moonblast
Psychic
Shadow Ball

Thanks to the fact that it’s only weak to two types of attacks, Ghost and Dark, Lunala is a really strong choice in a lot of fights. It’s completely immune to Normal and Fighting-type attacks, and it’s resistant to Poison. The big catch, of course, is the fact that Lunala is 4x as weak to Ghost and Dark-type moves. That’s not great.

Which Cosmoem evolution is better?

Solgaleo has more weaknesses than Lunala, therefore it is better to choose Lunala in Pokémon GO. With a variety of moves as well including Shadow Claw and Hex, a strong Lunala can take on normally occurring Pokémon as well as pulling the weight in the Master Leagues. If you want a sturdier Pokémon that can dish out powerful attacks, go for Lunala. Lunala is also the better choice if you’re looking for a Pokémon that has fewer type weaknesses or a strong raid Pokémon.

Lunala only has two weaknesses

It’s only weak to two types, Ghost and Dark, though both of them are quadruple weaknesses, so you’ll need to tread carefully. As a Ghost-type, Lunala has complete immunity to Normal and Fighting-type moves.

Solgaleo is a better choice if you’d rather have total immunity to Poison and various move types. Solgaleo also has a diversity move set including Fire, Psychic, Steel, and Grass. However, this Pokémon might need more help to be as useful as Lunala can be right after evolving. Solgaleo, it also opposes Poison-type moves, though not quite as strong.

Solgaleo’s moves are less diverse

Its moves are less diverse in type, but because more of them match its type combination, it will more frequently receive STAB. Cosmoem will evolve into Lunala if you use 100 Cosmog Candies at night.

Why you should choose Solgaleo

  • Immunity to poison
  • Fire, Psychic, Steel, and Grass-type moves

Why you should choose Lunala

  • High attack prowess
  • Only weak to Ghost and Dark-type moves
  • Immunity to Normal and Fighting-type moves
  • Frequently receives STAB
