How many friends can you have in Pokémon Go?

More friends, more rewards.

Pokémon Go is almost entirely built around features designed to get you out of the house and interacting with other players, including multiple ways to earn items or gameplay bonuses by playing with friends. But how many friends are too many for the mobile game to handle?

Friends in Pokémon Go can send Gifts to each other every day to get more items and bonuses when trading Pokémon or battling in Raids together. Those benefits, paired with how easy it is to add friends, really push you to add plenty of players to your Friend List to make the most of the opportunity. There, unfortunately, is a limit to how many other trainers you can add before that list caps out.

Niantic has set it so you can have up to 400 friends at any time in Pokémon Go. Once you hit that cap, you will need to go through and delete players from the list before you can add any additional friends.

There is currently no way to expand your Friend List as you can do with your Item Storage or Pokémon Boxes. The moment you hit that 400 friend cap, you are out of luck and need to start clearing out potentially inactive players who haven’t touched the game to make room for new, active friends who will send you Gifts and help you gain XP

You can quickly add other players as a friend by entering their unique 12-digit friend code in the Pokémon Go app’s “Add Friend” tab. You can also use the scanner option to add them using their unique QR code.

Once you add a friend to your Friend List, you can interact with them through trading, battling, or sending Gifts once per day. Gifts will net you various items including Poké Balls and Berries when you open them and will also give you a postcard based on the PokéStop it originates from. Registered friends can also be invited to Remote Raids anywhere in the world if they have a Remote Raid Pass or join up with local friends in Party Play.
