World of Warcraft has various expansions to play and many class options for players to try. Whether you want to play tanks, healers, or DPS characters, there are several variables you’ll need to decide on, like class and race. And sometimes, it can be tempting to have as many characters as possible in your preferred roles.
Because of this, you may be wondering how many characters you can have on your server. And whether there’s a difference for those playing Retail WoW or Classic WoW.
So, what are the max characters you can have on a WoW server?
Max characters per server in WoW
When choosing a server in WoW, looking at the server’s economy, player count, and whether the players are predominantly with Horde or Alliance is essential. This is to help ensure you aren’t being outnumbered and that there’s a stable economy. And you may find some servers are more welcoming to new players or alt characters than others.
Once you’ve decided on a server, you can create your character. The maximum number of characters a player can have in WoW is restricted, and it depends on which version of WoW you’re playing, whether it’s Classic or Retail.
According to a support guide from Blizzard, you can have the following maximum number of characters across all servers, and it’s limited to a single account:
- 60 characters in Modern (Retail) WoW
- 50 characters in WoW Classic Era
- 50 characters in Wrath Classic
It’s important to note you can only have a maximum of 10 characters per server in WoW Classic Era. And while you can, theoretically, have up to 60 characters in a server in Retail WoW, this may not always be possible, especially for servers with high populations.
