The Faith-Leap Trial in Baldur’s Gate 3 during the Gauntlet of Shar is especially challenging. To complete it, you must travel along an invisible pathway and retrieve the Umbral Gem. Here’s how to solve the Faith-Leap Trial in BG3.
How to complete the Faith-Leap Trial in Baldur’s Gate 3
To solve the Faith-Leap Trial in Baldur’s Gate 3, you must focus on the path between the door to the room and the Ancient Alter. One misstep is all it takes to accidentally die.
By lowering your graphics settings, the purple tiles that mark the safe steps will become easier to spot, making this part of the Trial much easier.
If you have any trouble here, check if your spellcasters have the Fly spell as it will trivialize the challenge. Another alternative is to use Teleportation Arrows to bypass this part of the Trial.
Finding the correct path is one thing, but there are also a few things you need to do before even entering the Trial.
- First, ungroup one of your characters from your party, as you’ll only take one character into the Trial. All you need to do is right-click on your chosen character’s profile on the left side of the screen and select the option “Ungroup.”
- Once you’ve done this, ensure your health bar is full and enter the Faith-Leap Trial.
If you’re okay with saving the game multiple times to continue the story without any consequences, make sure to do that every inch close you get to the Umbral Gem.
Step One: Ancient Altar Choice
The first thing you’ll see upon entering the Faith-Leap Trial is an Ancient Alter. When you interact with it you’re given three choices:
- Spill some of your blood in the bowl.
- Meet the statue’s gaze.
- Leave.
Choose the first option, spilling your blood, which means you take on a Bleeding effect for a short while. Head down the steps to your left and run toward the statue on that left platform.
Now, I know it looks like you will fall to your death, but you won’t. As you approach the statue, you receive the effect Blindness. I hit save right about here, and you ought to do the same.
As you successfully find each step, make a separate save. That way, if you mess up, you can quickly reload from that point and avoid any little missteps.
Step Two: Finding a safe path
The next part of the Faith-Leap Trial requires you to take a slightly diagonal route from the left platform to the center platform. Step into the darkness from the top left-hand corner of the platform.
Once in the darkness, move diagonally towards the middle platform, stopping when you reach the halfway point between the two.
From here, move a few paces horizontally across the room until you’re in line with the edge of the middle platform.
If the next platform isn’t too far, you might be able to jump directly to it. Lae’zel can jump quite far due to her high Strength ability score, especially when using her Githyanki Psionics: Jump skill.
All you need to do now is walk straight to the corner of the middle platform, where you’ll find temporary safety.
You now need to make your way from the middle platform to the area at the back of the room, where you’ll see a glowing orb in front of a seated statue. This is the last leg of the journey.
While standing at the top right corner of the middle platform, head forward until you’re roughly two-thirds of the way across the expanse and stop.
Now, you may be wondering why we’ve stopped here. That’s a good question. We’re stopping here because it’s close enough to use “Jump” and safely land on the platform in the back room. If you find that your jump can’t quite reach, inch forward. Take baby steps until you can “Jump.”
At the back platform, you can take the glowing ball, which turns out to be the Umbral Gem, and interact with the disc in front of the statue. This is an Umbral Transporter that takes you back to the starting point in front of the Ancient Altar.
Given this is BH3, a game where almost anything is possible (even polyamorous relationships), there may be another safe path that can take you across the platforms to collect the Umbral Gem. However, this is the best path to take for the Faith-Leap Trial.
You may find this challenge extremely difficult if your brightness settings are low because the platforms are shrouded in darkness. By going into the Lighting settings under Video, you can adjust the settings until you find what works for you.
Tips and tricks: Cheat code spells to help you beat the Faith-Leap Trial in BG3
If you’re a Draconic Sorcerer, you can also use the Fly spell and soar to the front of the middle platform’s statue and then to the very back of the room. This is a level 11 spell, though, so you may not have access to it at this point in your playthrough.
Aside from the Fly spell, the Githyanki Psionics: Jump ability and items like Teleportation Arrows will also make the challenge significantly easier, as they allow you to skip nearly the entire Trial.
Players used to cast Daylight in the room to reveal the hidden path. Although this spell is available to Clerics, Druids, Paladins, Rangers, and Sorcerers, it no longer illuminates the invisible path in the Faith-Leap Trial after BG3‘s Patch 6.
Finally, if you’re a Bard, Sorcerer, Warlock, or Wizard, you can use the level four spell Dimension Door to teleport yourself across the room. With that, you’ve beaten the Faith-Leap Trial in Baldur’s Gate 3 and can continue your adventures in the Gauntlet of Shar.
