You can find Rolan in Baldur’s Gate 3 in several locations, like The Hollow in Act 1 and the Last Light Inn in Act Two.
Rolan is fairly grouchy upon meeting him, as he had to make a pretty miserable trip through the shadowlands. You’ll be able to take on the quest “Rolan in the Shadows” after meeting him.
Who is Rolan in BG3?
Rolan is an Asmodeus Tiefling who has no allegiance towards the Tiefling Refugees. You can first meet him in Emerald Grove as he argues with his siblings about leaving the grove before the Goblin attack and heading to Baldur’s Gate for safety.
He is an NPC that has more story than most and can be seen in all Acts of BG3 if kept alive. Here is where you can find him in each Act of BG3.
Where to find Rolan in the Shadows in BG3
Rolan can be found in Emerald Grove in Act One, Last Light Inn in Act Two, and Sorcerous Sundries in Act Three. However, he can die and to see him in all Acts, you must keep him alive.
Where to Find Rolan in Act One in BG3?
Rolan can be first sighted arguing with his siblings in Emerald Grove during Act One of BG3. He does not want to help the Tiefling Refugees and wants to leave for Baldur’s Gate to safety. You can interact with Rolan and his siblings to persuade them to stay or, if failing the Persuasion check of a 10, they will all leave the Grove unless offered money.
If you are playing Gale or have him as a companion, Rolan can introduce Gale to the wizard, Lorroakan.
Rolan can die in Act One once the Goblins attack. This battle can end his story, so make sure to protect him and his siblings, Cal and Lia and they will attend the celebration after Defeating the Goblins.
Where to Find Rolan in Act Two in BG3?
You can find Rolan at the Last Light Inn in Act Two specifically at these coordinates: (X:-77 and Y:146).
You will find Rolan looking glum and drinking away his sadness because his siblings were taken to Moonrise Towers. Of course, Rolan will only appear at the inn if you previously chose to save Emerald Grove from the goblins.
According to other characters, Rolan sacrificed his siblings, Lia and Cal, so the other tieflings could safely make it. At some point, Rolan’s sadness will get the better of him and will cause him to venture out into the shadow-cursed lands alone, and you need to rescue him.
How to complete the Rolan in the Shadows quest in BG3
To find Rolan in the shadow-cursed lands, head to the Ruined Battlefield near the bridge that leads to Reithwin Tollhouse, more specifically: (X: -54, Y: -111).
- Return to the Moonrise Towers waypoint. Instead of going across the bridge to the tower, go east near the Tollhouse and over the bridge spanning the river.
- From here, go slightly south, and you should hear some shouting.
- Rolan will be surrounded by shadow enemies near a broken-down bridge near the water. Once you see him, combat will initiate, and your main job is ensuring Rolan does not die.
When encountering him, shadow monsters will attack you, the party, and Rolan. Make sure to kill the monsters before they can hurt Rolan. If Rolan does get hurt, you can heal him.
Where to Find Rolan in Act Three in BG3?
Rolan can be found in Sorcerous Sundries at the front desk in Act Three. He will possess a stiff behavior as there is something wrong. You guessed it, you are going to have to do some more saving.
During the Nightsong battle, he has a pivotal change in his story. If his siblings were saved, Rolan will side against his wizard master, Lorroaken. If his siblings were not saved, he will side with Lorroaken against you. When the battle concludes with Rolan on your side, he will pledge to help you in the final battle against the Netherbrain.
Rolan is an exceptional wizard acquaintance and it is in your best interest to keep him alive throughout the story of BG3 so that you have a powerful ally at your side in the endgame.
