The players from Team Dignitas’ former Counter-Strike: Global Offensive roster will sign with Danish football club F.C. Copenhagen (FCK), sources close to the situation tell Dot Esports. F.C. Copenhagen also announced it’s foray into esports today.
Yesterday, the CS:GO scene was still in shock. Team Dignitas, recently acquired by the Philadelphia 76ers, announced it would not field its Danish CS:GO roster in 2017. The Danes, currently in top form, had just qualified for the next Major and are looking poised to make a deep run at the $1 million event. Fans and pundits were baffled. How could the Sixers not keep a team in such a form? Who would replace the Danes? And, of course, where would the players end up now?
Today it appears to be that from 2017 onwards, Rene “cajunb” Borg, Kristian “k0nfig” Wienecke, Mathias “MSL” Lauridsen, Ruben “rubino” Villarroel, Emil “Magisk” Reif, and their coach Casper “Ruggah” Due, will apparently take the stage in F.C. Copenhagen’s jerseys.
The record-winning football club and reigning champion in Denmark’s Superliga has announced its foray into esports today, as reported by Danish paper FINANS. The club wants to invest a double-digit million figure in Danish Krone annually, and field teams in FIFA, CS:GO, and Dota 2. Sources close to the situation tell Dot Esports that, indeed, the Danes surrounding in-game leader MSL are about to sign with the Danish football club. The official announcement is expected for in January next year, when the contracts with Dignitas have officially expired.
While FCK isn’t the first Danish club involved in esports, OB Odense signed a FIFA player this summer, the club is looking to become a real Danish powerhouse in esports. It also becomes the first European football club willing to invest into CS:GO esports. Many traditional clubs still shy away from the game due to its close-to-reality terrorism setting and violence.
The former Dignitas CS:GO team has already announced that it will participate in the upcoming World Esports Games and also keeps the right to participate in the upcoming ELEAGUE Major. The team is expected to wear the club’s jerseys for both events already.
