Several teams began their open bracket journey with aspirations of qualifying for pool play, but only four squads could go undefeated to earn a spot in the 2018 CWL Birmingham Open group stage—Enigma6, Cyclone, Team Heretics, and Vast Esports.

Enigma6 are arguably the most notable squad to qualify for pool play at CWL Birmingham. Jordon General, Troy “Sender” Michaels, Steven “Diabolic” Rivero, and Tyler “aBeZy” Pharris swept compLexity in order to earn their spot in Pool B alongside Team Kaliber, FaZe Clan, UNILAD, and Vitality.

Vast Esports, led by Michael “Swarley” Carter, qualified for Pool D by taking down Monaco Esports—a team that was in pool play at CWL Atlanta earlier this month. Swarley, Darien “NauX” Chverchko, Jimmy “Evasion” Svetich, and Dylan “Cells” Mock will now battle against Luminosity, Splyce, Red Reserve, and Mindfreak in Pool D.

Cyclone are one of the European squads who went undefeated in the open bracket. Brian “Braaain” Fairlamb, Adam “Peatie” Peate, Shea “QwiKeR” Sweeney, and Zach “Zed” Denyer beat Gone Gaming 3-1 to earn their spot in Pool A alongside Rise Nation, Echo Fox, eUnited, and Epsilon.

Finally, Team Heretics made their second-straight open bracket run to appear in pool play. Juan “JurNii” Antonio González, Alejandro “Lucky” López, Jorge “MethodZ” Bancells, and Endika “Sukry” Andres beat Giants Gaming 3-1 to qualify for Pool C, where they’ll play against OpTic Gaming, Team Envy, Reckless, and Evil Geniuses.

Although these four teams survived the grueling open bracket, this weekend’s tournament is far from over. Pool play action is now underway at CWL Birmingham, as teams will fight for the top two spots in each group to advance into the championship winners bracket.
