Two of the best teams in the world secured their spots in the Call of Duty World League Global Pro League playoffs Sunday evening.
EUnited and Luminosity Gaming finished first and second respectively in the Yellow Group of the CWL Global Pro League—further cementing themselves as two of North America’s finest teams.
Luminosity entered play on Sunday tied with Epsilon Esports at 2-2, while eUnited was in a strong position to advance with a 4-0 record. In order to qualify for the CWL GPL playoffs, Luminosity needed to outperform Epsilon against the rest of their group, since both teams had already played each other twice.
Epsilon began the day with a commanding 2-0 lead against eUnited. But in typical fashion, eUnited bounced back to reverse sweep Epsilon 3-2. This pushed Epsilon down to 2-3 as Luminosity prepared to square off against Millenium, who was 0-4 at the time.
Luminosity made quick work of the Europeans, sweeping them 3-0 to improve to 3-2 on the weekend. Meanwhile, Millenium remained on stage to play their final match of the weekend against Epsilon.
Once again, Epsilon jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Millenium refused to go down without a fight, taking an impressive 9-5 victory on Precinct Uplink. Epsilon did eventually finish off Millenium with a 250-70 win on Breakout Hardpoint. Millenium ended the weekend with a disappointing 0-6 record, while Epsilon sat at 3-3.
Heading into the final match of the night between Luminosity and eUnited, Luminosity was in control of their own destiny. All they had to do was win two maps against eUnited to secure a playoff spot over Epsilon—but Luminosity was able to do more than that.
The series went all the way to game five round 11, but Luminosity defeated eUnited 3-2 to give them their first and only series loss of the weekend.
EUnited earned the top spot in the Yellow Group with a 5-1 record, while Luminosity came in second at 4-2. Now that their weekend of CWL GPL action has come to an end, both of these teams will focus their attention on the playoffs at the end of May.
