The most popular Call of Duty team in Australia captured a title today at the second amateur open bracket event of the Black Ops 4 season.
Mindfreak destroyed Kairos Esports in two best-of-five series this morning to win the MTN DEW AMP GAME FUEL Open Bracket competition at CWL London 2019.
For the second time this year, a major Call of Duty LAN event featured a professional tournament and a separate amateur event. And Mindfreak—Conrad “Shockz” Rymarek, Lincoln “Fighta” Ferguson, Luke “Louqa” Rigas, Daniel “Swifty” Hickey, and Jayden “Setzyy” Hewitt—has appeared in the grand finals of the open bracket competition both times so far.
At CWL Fort Worth in March, Mindfreak were reverse swept by FC Black. This time, however, they made sure to take care of business against Kairos Esports—Joshua-Lee “Joshh” Sheppard, Nick Nolson, Connor “Weeman” Chilton, Cameron “Cammy” McKilligan, and Adam “Defrag” Mathews.
Since they were coming from the losers bracket, Mindfreak needed to beat Kairos in two best-of-five series to capture the title. And that’s exactly what they did.
The first series was over in the blink of an eye. Mindfreak won Frequency Hardpoint 250-216, Hacienda Search and Destroy 6-2, and Seaside Control 3-0 to reset the bracket.
European fans probably hoped that Kairos would turn things around in the second series, but the Aussies just kept on winning. They took Hacienda Hardpoint 250-81, Payload Search and Destroy 6-2, and Seaside Control (again) 3-1 to complete their second-consecutive sweep of Kairos.
After winning six-straight maps in the grand finals, the Aussies secured $15,000 along with their open bracket championship. Kairos, on the other hand, earned $12,500 for coming in second place.
Although the open bracket tournament has come to an end, the main event is still going on. OpTic Gaming, 100 Thieves, eUnited, Team Envy, and Gen.G are all still alive and fighting for a championship at CWL London.
