OpTic Gaming proved why they’re the best team in the world this weekend, going undefeated in the Green Group of the Call of Duty World League Global Pro League.
Entering Sunday, OpTic was 4-0 and needed just two more series victories to become the first team with a perfect 6-0 record in the regular season of the CWL Global Pro League—and that’s exactly what they did.
The Green Wall began the day with a back-and-forth series against Elevate. OpTic won the opening Hardpoint, but the Europeans responded by taking the Search and Destroy and Uplink maps. Facing a 2-1 deficit, OpTic took the final Hardpoint and Search and Destroy maps to secure the 3-2 series win.
In the final match of the night, OpTic took on Enigma6 in a battle for first place. Although OpTic was undefeated, Enigma6’s only loss came against them on Friday—so if E6 managed to win this match 3-0 or 3-1, they could’ve stolen first place away from the Green Wall.
But, OpTic controlled their own destiny and didn’t allow that to happen. A late surge on Scorch Hardpoint in map one gave OpTic all the momentum heading into the next two maps, and the Green Wall completed the 3-0 sweep of E6 to finish off their perfect record.
Enigma6 did beat Red Reserve in their first match of the night 3-1, and finished in second place in the Green Group. Their only two losses came against OpTic Gaming.
Meanwhile, Red Reserve shockingly fell into last place after Elevate beat them in a game five Throwback Search and Destroy. Both European teams in this group went 1-5, but because of the tiebreaker rules, Elevate secured third place, while Red Reserve came in last and will have to fight for their spot in the second season of the CWL Global Pro League at the relegation tournament in June.
With Green Group play coming to a close last night, the first regular season of the CWL Global Pro League has officially ended. The top two teams in each group will now advance to compete in the season one playoffs on May 25 to 28.
Seven out of the eight teams that qualified for the playoffs are North American—Splyce was the only European team to make the playoffs. Additionally, three of the four teams to come in last place in their group were from Europe, with Cloud9 the only North American squad to finish at the bottom of their pool.
If OpTic continues to play as well as they did this weekend, it’ll be difficult for any of the teams in the playoffs to take them down—but with $500,000 on the line, everyone will be gunning for that top spot when the playoffs start in two weeks.
