Spanish Counter-Strike: Global Offensive star Oscar “mixwell” Cañellas has left G2 Esports—but he could still end up back on the team once it figures out its new lineup.
Mixwell, the former in-game leader for the team, has been given the go-ahead to search for new teams and opportunities after his trial period with the team expired. Brought on as a temporary replacement for Richard “shox” Papillon on March 9, mixwell’s time in G2 lasted a little less than three months.
While the player’s tweet about the situation indicates he’s officially done with the team, G2’s announcement of the move suggests that mixwell is still in consideration to be a part of the team going forward.
“The decision-making process to define the final line-up that will represent G2 Esports moving forward has started.” The team said. “While this occurs, we wish to give Oscar the opportunity to explore any options on the market… We have no doubts that he will find success in the upcoming years, regardless whether he ends up in G2’s final lineup or not.”
2018 has, so far, not been ideal for the French CS:GO team.
Despite assembling one of France’s most star-studded roster, with players like Kenny “kennyS” Schrub, shox, and Dan “apEX” Madesclaire, in 2017—the team has not been able to win event titles. Although the team was consistently placing well, a hand-related injury saw shox unable to play for a prolonged period of time. As such, mixwell was brought onboard as a temporary replacement.
Unfortunately for the team, its results have remained stagnant.

It has also been reported that the French organization is losing faith in its current iteration of the roster. Initially it was believed that the team would be given until the FACEIT Valve Major in September to improve its results, though this no longer appears to be the case.
G2 will be sending a new roster to the upcoming Esports Championship Series finals in London in two weeks time.
