China impresses, Virtus Pro fall behind after the first day of the StarSeries group stage

Despite not getting a lot of international play, Vici Gaming Flash almost started the day off with a tremendous upset against SK Gaming. Despite winning the opening map of the series, Cache, SK won the two remaining maps, sending the Chinese team to the lower group. But where Vici Gaming Flash couldn’t seal the deal, China’s TyLoo caused the largest upset of the day by defeating Ukrainian favorites Natus Vincere in two straight maps.

Outside of the Chinese teams’ success, North America’s finest in Team Liquid comfortably dispatched their compatriots at NRG Esports. While SK still don’t appear to be their usual selves, the two-time Valve Major winners still worked their way past Vici Gaming Flash—although it wasn’t pretty.

Out of all the losses on the event’s first day, however, none were more disparaging than Virtus Pro being defeated by AGO Esports. The demise of the Polish Valve Major champions has been impossible for fans to ignore, but even so, they retained the reputation of being Poland’s strongest team. Now, not even that is certain however, as AGO took down Virtus Pro in two straight maps.

With these results, the schedule for tomorrow’s games will look like this:

Upper matches:

  • AGO vs. NiP
  • mousesports vs. TyLoo
  • Godsent vs. Liquid
  • SK Gaming vs. Avangar

Lower matches:

  • Virtus Pro vs. Gambit
  • Renegades vs. HellRaisers
  • NRG vs. North
  • Na’Vi vs. Vici Gaming Flash

The matches will start at 2am CT.
