Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer mod CyberMP has gone through its first playtest, pitting 20 players in Night City in races and team deathmatch-style shootups.
The solo developer behind the CyberMP mod recently invited YouTuber Juicehead and other players to its first-ever playtest. With GTA Online-style server functionality already in place, the mod shows a lot of promise, as seen in Juicehead’s July 6 video. Players can roam the huge map of Night City together and engage in firefights or races against each other, which has been an unfulfilled dream for Cyberpunk 2077 players ever since its official multiplayer mode was shelved to focus on fixing the game.
With a fan-made multiplayer mod, you’d usually be concerned about desync and teleportation glitches. But surprisingly, that’s not the case with CyberMP. “Functionality-wise, my hits were registering as they should,” noted Juicehead. “It’s not like you had to lead your targets or had any issues with netcode.” He further added that races felt “even more impressive” and compared the minor desyncs while racing during the playtest to something you’d experience in Forza, a full-blown multiplayer racing title.
The playtest build lacked character animations, and firefights did seem a bit janky as a result. But that area has seen a lot of improvement, too, as new third-person animations showcased in CyberMP’s latest video have been introduced.
CyberMP still does not have a release date. But if we had to assume from the showcase videos, it’s not too far off.
The mod reportedly does not aim to incorporate co-op play. But with the groundwork laid by CyberMP, that goal might not be too far-fetched if more mod authors join together to further it as a community project.
