Despite being already available to hundreds of thousands of players, Deadlock is nonetheless a title still in early development. How early depends on the hero and system, but now, the game’s lead developer Yoshi has confirmed that most heroes will be seeing reworks “to some degree at least.”
Yoshi said this on the game’s official Discord server that’s only available to those who gain access to Deadlock itself, but a screenshot of it was shared in a Sept. 12 Reddit thread. Yamato was thus far the only hero repeatedly mentioned as a candidate for a rework due to her current model seemingly originating from when Deadlock was still planned to be set in a cyberpunk world. Now, however, it seems most heroes will be seeing changes to either their looks, kit, or both, depending on how fleshed out they are at the moment.
Unfortunately for fans, Yoshi didn’t shed light on the specific heroes that are planned for changes, nor the extent to which any will be changed. In the Reddit thread above, players expressed their theories, with the majority believing these so-called reworks will likely be minor design changes rather than full-blown redesigns. From its current look, I’d wager Viscous is next in line after Yamato, while I cannot put my finger on what the follow-up would be either for minor or substantial changes.
We did catch a glimpse at what Yamato might look like down the line some weeks ago when the developers reportedly shared proposed redesigns for the hero. Though they’re still sketches and not actual models, they give us an idea about what this strange hero could look like in the future when Deadlock is a bit farther ahead in its development.
The team at Valve is being oddly communicative for Deadlock, going against its silent tradition, so there’s a high chance we’ll be seeing more of these proposed redesigns for other heroes as time goes on.
