Diablo 4 is here and players are looking to get the best possible gear, leading many to wonder how to get Baleful Fragments in the game.
To upgrade your weapons, you will need a number of crafting materials, the most basic of which is iron and silver. While those two materials can be found easily, some of the more advanced ones require work.
To push a legendary weapon to its full power, players must undergo the upgrade process four times. For the first three, you will only need iron, silver, and Veiled Crystals, but the task gets harder for the final upgrade because you will also need Baleful Fragments, one of the rarest materials in Diablo 4.
How to get Baleful Fragments in Diablo 4
There is only one way to get Baleful Fragments in Diablo 4, which is to salvage legendary weapons, providing you with the crafting material you need to upgrade the same legendary weapons.

Finding legendary weapons takes a lot of grinding, with their drops coming down to luck. Completing dungeons, defeating bosses and running through Strongholds are the way to go, though it may take several attempts.
Once a legendary weapon is acquired, it is then down to you to decide whether it is one you want to use. If not, we recommend salvaging it to receive some Baleful Fragments rather than locking it away in your storage or selling it.
What is the drop rate of Baleful Fragments in Diablo 4?
Like many things in Diablo 4, receiving Baleful Fragments is not guaranteed as there are a few requirements to receiving this key piece of crafting material.
Crucially, players will not receive a Baleful Fragment if they are salvaging a legendary weapon with less than 399 Item Power because only weapons with 400+ Item Power result in a Baleful Fragment.
It should also be noted that Baleful Fragments do not drop when salvaging legendary armor and are only received when salvaging legendary weapons.
How to farm Baleful Fragments in Diablo 4
Since farming Baleful Fragments is not something you can do directly, as it requires salvaging a legendary weapon with 400+ Item Power, the focus should instead be on getting a hold of as many legendary weapons as possible.
If you are yet to complete the campaign or an in World Tier Two, completing World Events is the best tactic as Elite enemies have a chance of dropping legendary weapons and Murmuring Obols can be earned from completing the event. You can then spend the Obols at the Purveyor or Curiosities for another chance at legendary weapons. Alternatively, you can try to farm for legendaries in Dungeons.
The best farming method we have found for legendary items comes in World Tier Three, where the tactic of completing World Events can be done alongside Helltides. As well as picking up Murmuring Obols to spend, you can also collect Aberrant Cinders and use these to unlock Tortured Gifts.
For a legendary weapon, the target for Aberrant Cinders is 150 and you should then look on your map for the Tortured Gift of Weaponry chest.
Any surplus legendary weapons you pick up while doing this tactic can then be salvaged at a Blacksmith, providing Baleful Fragments to upgrade the weapons you need for the best build possible.
