Living Steel is a summoning material in Diablo 4 used to call up endgame boss Grigoire, The Galvanic Saint. Not only does this boss reward anyone who can defeat him with some incredible loot, but he also drops other summoning materials. So, getting and using Living Steel is super crucial in the endgame.
Where to find Living Steel in Diablo 4
You get Living Steel from the Tortured Gift of Living Steel chest in Diablo 4‘s Helltides. The resource also randomly drops after defeating Elites, Hellbornes (Helltide), and the Blood Maiden (Helltide), or you can collect it by participating in Events like Legion and World Boss, finding Treasure Goblins, and opening Whisper caches.
As you can guess, the best and fastest way to get Living Steel is through Helltides, which run every hour for 55 minutes then go on a five-minute break. Once the time is up, it will reappear in another area of the map, and you can enjoy the Helltides for another 55 minutes. It’s pure chaos and can be a lot of fun. If you’ve never participated in the Helltides, you’ll know you’re in a Helltide area if the region is highlighted in red.
To open the Tortured Gift of Living Steel chest, which gives around five Living Steel, you need to earn 275 Abberant Cinders. You can get these by killing enemies in Helltide events. I’ve also received Living Steel from other Tortured Gift chests (approx. one per chest in World Tier Four) so it can also be a good option if you’re running out of time and need to spend Cinder quickly. They don’t roll over into the next Helltide.
During Helltides, you can also get Living Steel by killing Elites, taking on Hellbornes which spawn after you anger Hell, and defeating the Blood Maiden, which you can summon using Baneful Hearts. I like to complete the tasks in Helltides that also give Grim Favors because when you get 10 you can choose a cache at the Tree of Whispers. This means you can still enjoy Helltides and get Living Steel while completing tasks to get caches.
You can also get Living Steel from Treasure Goblins; a method I’ve never actually seen work. So, if you’re farming specifically for Living Steel, this may not be the best option.
What is Living Steel used for in Diablo 4?
Living Steel is used to summon the endgame boss Grigoire, The Galvanic Saint. It takes two Living Steel to spawn Grigoire in World Tier Three and five to spawn the same boss in World Tier Four. However, the tormented version actually requires both Living Steel and a Stygian Stone to be summoned.
To spawn Grigoire, take your Living Steel to the dungeon called the Hall of the Penitent found in the Dry Steppes, which opens in World Tiers Three and Four.
I recommend waiting until you reach World Tier Four to take on Grigoire. Though you need to gather more Living Steel in this tier, Grigoire only drops Shards of Agony in World Tier Four. This is a vital summoning material used to call up the Echo of Duriel, another endgame boss who drops even more rare and legendary loot than Grigoire.
