Using Summons in FF7 Rebirth is completely random, and you will have to wait until the dormant Summon awakens and chooses to fight by your side.
Unlike the original 1997 title, it’s a bit of Chocobo poop that you can’t choose when to use your hard-earned Summons, but that’s the nature of the beast—but what beasts they are! It’s not all concrete, but here’s a quick guide to how Summon Materia seems to work in FF7 Rebirth:
- Once you’ve been in a battle long enough, taken enough damage, or FF7 Rebirth recognizes you’re in a boss fight, a special Summon countdown meter will appear on the right-hand side of the screen.
- You need to either fight or hold on until it fills up.
- When it does, make sure you have an ATB charge so you can call forth any of the equipped Summons in your party.
- The Summon will attack of its own accord, but you can trigger special attacks using ATB charges.
- Once the new Summon meter reaches its end, the dominant creature will unleash a final, devastating attack to signal its farewell for now.
