Fortnite’s latest weapon has gone live as part of last week’s v4.5 content update.
The Drum Gun, which is better known to most as a Tommy Gun, is now available inside Fortnite: Battle Royale. It uses medium ammo and has a 50-round clip, making it a higher capacity alternative to the game’s existing assault rifles.
It comes in uncommon and rare variants from regular loot spawns, and has a base damage rate of 26 and 27 for each rarity. That means the rare Drum Gun will have the same base damage rate as a common Burst Rifle.
Of course you aren’t using this gun for its damage per shot. You’re using it because of the increased fire rate over the assault rifles, and its better magazine size than the SMGs. SMGs are particularly popular and powerful right now, so time will tell if this makes an impact in that meta.
The gun was first unveiled by dataminers @TwoEpicBuddies on Twitter when the 4.5 content update officially launched last week. It’s the second new weapon to be added in as many weeks, after the dual pistols were added last Wednesday in v4.5.
There’s been no indication of any new additions for later this week, or even if this might be the only content update.
If you want to test out this new gun, you can do so in the game’s Playground LTM. The LTM went live last week but was taken offline due to server issues until yesterday. Hopefully it stays up this time—ideally for good.
