Some newly uncovered Fortnite: Battle Royale files seem to indicate that item gifting might be coming sooner rather than later.
Back in April, a Reddit user posted datamined information which revealed some preliminary files related to gifting items. And today, the Twitter account @FNBRLeaks posted more details, most notably the feature’s in-game text and assets. There are nearly three dozen strings of text and over 20 assets, which include the specific buttons and texts the game would use for any gifting functions.
While this feature remains unconfirmed, its presence in the game files—and the fact that there are more new details since April’s datamine—could mean gifting is close to going live.
For some time, a large section of Fortnite players have been asking for a way to give and receive cosmetic items. While many players end up spending a little bit of money for a cool skin or harvesting tool, some don’t want to spend the cash or are not in the position to do so.
Gifting would be a great way to solve that problem, and it would give players a new way to interact with others. The drawback for such a feature, however, would be players selling cosmetic items at a slightly lower cost, creating a secondary market and defeating the purpose of “gifting” items to others. An issue Epic Games could address if and when the feature goes live.
Despite these risks, this datamine would suggest Epic will go ahead with implementing the gifting system that people have long been asking for.
