Fortnite: Battle Royale fans are going to have to wait a little bit longer before jumping back into the Playground Limited Time Mode.
Epic Games has revealed via Twitter that Playground won’t be returning to Fortnite tonight, even after developers said they were implementing changes to the mode before pushing it live later in the day.
Playground has been a highly-anticipated game mode for many fans, with some believing a sandbox-style mode could help new players learn the game quicker due to the more casual environment. When the mode became available with the v4.5 update, not many players were able to try Playground before Epic pulled it out of the game to work on the seemingly-extensive matchmaking issues.
Earlier on Thursday, an Epic employee posted on Reddit with an explanation of what went wrong with Playground’s launch, and what the developer has done since then to be more prepared moving forward.

“Yesterday we launched the Playground LTM,” MrPopoTFS said. “So many of you rushed in to create and play that our matchmaking service fell over. We’ve since separated the Playground matchmaker from the one that affects the default modes and made large improvements to assist with the number of players. We plan to push these changes and improvements live later today to bring the Playground LTM back online.”
Unfortunately, the changes still need a little more time and work. The official Fortnite Twitter account tweeted at 10:49pm CT saying that Epic needed to test the matchmaking improvements more before unlocking Playground, canceling tonight’s expected return.
The tweet said more details will be made available tomorrow, but that doesn’t necessarily confirm Playground will be back tomorrow as well, although fans certainly hope so.
