Armada wins Beast 6 Melee tournament after close match with Leffen

Some of the world's best Super Smash Bros

Some of the world’s best Super Smash Bros. Melee players met this weekend in Sweden, but it was a pair of locals who faced off in the grand finals match.

Of course, those two Swedes also happen to both be ranked in the top six in the world: Smash God Adam “Armada” Lindgren and William “Leffen” Hjelte.

Hjelte, coming from the losers side, took a 3-1 victory over Lindgren to reset the bracket. But much like his grand finals match at Genesis 3 last month, Lindgren bounced back to win the second series 3-0 and take home the title.

This is the first tournament Hjelte has competed at since he became the first Red Bull-sponsored Super Smash Bros. player last week. (He’s now sponsored by both the drink manufacturer and Team SoloMid, one of the biggest esports organizations in the world.)

Both players play Fox, the game’s strongest character, and have been rivals for quite sometime. After Hjelte’s successful run on Fox in the end of 2014 and half of 2015 (including a first-place at Community Effort Orlando 2015), Lindgren learned Fox to be able to matchup evenly. He’s nowthe undisputed best player in the world, only losing to fellow god Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma once since that loss in Orlando last summer.

Some familiar faces finished below Lindgren and Hjelte. American Falco player Weston “Westballz” Dennis finished beneath Hjelte in the losers’ bracket, while rising Fox player Mustafa “Ice” Akcakaya placed fourth.

European players Alvaro “Trifasia” Garcia Moral, Aaron “Professor Pro” Thomas, and Amsah “Amsah” D. Augustuszoon, as well as Dallas-Fort Worth Ice Climbers legend Robert “Wobbles” Wright rounded out the top eight.
