CLG’s Halo side wins biggest FPS prize ever

Counter Logic Gaming won the biggest prize in first person shooter esports history at the Halo World Championships this weekend. 

With its $1 million first prize, CLG became the first team outside of Dota 2’s majors to win a seven-figure prize from a single esports event, defeating Allegiance with a dominant 4-0 performance in the final.

Allegiance take home $500,000 for their efforts in reaching the final.

The tournament was dominated by North American teams, with seven of the eight sides from the region making the quarterfinals. Epsilon eSports were the only team from outside the region to advance from the group stage, and they were soundly beaten by Team eLevate 3-0.

After winning the North American regionals last month, CLG were favorites to take the World Championship.

The prize pool for the event had started at $1 million, with the further $1.5 million raised through sales of in-game REQ packs.

The tournament was a significant step up for Halo esports, and developers 343 are clearly happy with the progress—before the event had even concluded a new edition of the Halo Championship Series was announced for the coming months.
