Competitive Super Smash Bros. player Juan “Hungrybox” Debiedma had one of the worst performances of his career at Big House 4 last month, finishing outside the top eight for the first time. But this weekend, Debiedma came back with a vengeance, beating Florida rival Colin “Colbol” Green for the title at Fight Pitt V.

“I was very focused and I practiced and it paid off,” Debiedma told the Daily Dot after his victory. “Preparation is important, and I know better now what is necessary to win.”

The character matchup in the final—Green’s Fox versus Debiedma’s JigglyPuff—has plagued Debiedma for some time. Fox can get inside of Jigglypuff’s guard and disrupt the character’s flow. Instead of melting under the same pressure that cut his Big House 4 run short, Debiedma read Green’s offense and countered with perfect setups to take the grand final 3-0.

“I knew that if I lost to Colin this weekend, it would mark my decline and people would put me under [William “Leffen” Hjelte”] for sure,” Debiedma said. “So I put it all on the line and played my hardest.”

Fortunately for him, his best is still more than enough to turn the floating pink Jigglypuff into a force to be reckoned with.
