Few companies have managed to last long enough to host 100 events in esports. And Major League Gaming (MLG) is planning to make the most of it.
The 100th MLG event will be the 2015 MLG World Finals, a year-end event featuring $500,000 in prizes split between the organization’s two competitive titles, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Dota 2. In March, the league revealed plans for a championship event after the conclusion of its third season of pro league play, but today it’s officially announced.
The Finals will hit New Orleans on Oct. 16-18 at the Ernest N. Morial Center. Tickets are already on sale with a General Admission pass setting you back $49.00 and VIP passes at a whopping $199.00.
The event will serve as a second major in the Call of Duty calendar. The competitive schedule is currently centered around the $1 million Call of Duty Championship, but the MLG Final, which should feature around $250,000 in prize money for Call of Duty, puts the MLG competitions on the same scale, giving Call of Duty another major tournament to close out the calendar year.
In Dota 2, another $250,000 battle may be a drop in the bucket compared to the $11 million-plus already put in for The International, but it’s a solid step towards building a bigger infrastructure for the game in America outside of the Valve-backed International events.
The announcement offers little new information considering MLG’s plans to host a $250,000 championships for its two games were already well-known, but it solidifies the date on the calendar for the 100th event in its history—an impressive feat for one of esports’ most iconic companies.
