After a weekend of upsets and surprise victories, European players shined in the Smash 4 edition of Super Smash Bros. Beast 6.
Dutch player Ramin “Mr. R” Delshad took first place at the event in Sweden Sunday. Using Sheik, the LowLandLions player demonstrated why he’s been considered one of the best in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U—and why that’s not likely to change.
While he looked dominant in his victory in the grand finals, most never even expected his opponent to be there.
Dennis “iStudying” Kwarteng took down some of the best names America has to offer in his march to the finals. His character choice, Pokémon character Greninja, is often overlooked by other pros—the only other notable player to main Greninja in Smash for Wii U is popular caster D’Ron “D1” Maingrette.
In the losers semifinals, Kwarteng’s masterful Greninja took down American Diddy Kong player Jestise “MVD” Negron, who has become a staple in the Smash for Wii U community stateside. Kwarteng then took down Negron’s teammate, Eric “ESAM” Lew, one of the game’s best, in a close 3-2 match.
After that pair of surprise victories, Kwarteng’s faced Delshad in the final. But he couldn’t handle the powerful and devastating Sheik play from the second place finisher at Evo.
Most of the world’s best players are from the Americas, with a few exceptions in Japan like Ryuto “Ranai” Hayashi and Yuta “Abadango” Kawamura. Beast 6, however, demonstrated that Europe does in fact have great talent in Smash for Wii U. For Europe to really make a mark, however, these players will need to travel stateside for this summer’s major circuit, which begins with Community Effort Orlando in June.
