After a 25-year hiatus, the Nintendo World Championships are back. Nintendo gaming competition will return at the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in May, the company announced earlier today.
For everyone too young to remember, the Nintendo World Championships were held in 1990 as a competition to find the best gamer in the United States. (So no, despite its name, it wasn’t actually a worldwide competition.) The contest included modified Nintendo cartridges of Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris. When the dust settled, Nintendo added up players’ scores from all three games to reveal a winner. Teen Thor Aackerlund was the ultimate, if unofficial victor, after beating champions of the two other age brackets at the end of the competition.
There’s still no word on what games will be playable, although we wouldn’t be surprised if New Super Mario Bros, Super Smash Bros., or Donkey Kong made it into the mix. Qualifying competitions begin on May 30, with the championship games taking place June 14 in Los Angeles right before E3.
We just hope we finally get a sequel to 1989’s The Wizard out of all this.
