Rocket League is absolutely taking over Twitch, and people are already starting to ask: “could this be the next big esport?” Now, after five million downloads in three weeks, the soccer and racing hybrid might be one step closer to that esports future with the release of a spectator mode next month.
A fully functional spectator mode would open the door to organizers who want to create a real broadcast experience for spectators.
With tens of thousands watching it on Twitch, ESL tournaments already underway, and some of gaming’s top personalities playing it, Rocket League has taken over the gaming world—and it shows no signs of stopping.
Thanks to the game’s high profile Steam launch and the fact that it’s free for Playstation Plus members until Aug. 4, the game has flown past five million total downloads. Keen to continue the game’s momentum, earlier today developer Psyonix announced the game’s first DLC pack will be released early next month with a mixture of free and paid content.
Coming at no extra charge to the base game will be a brand new arena, some new music and cosmetics—and the spectator mode. If you want more cars, trophies and even more cosmetics, it will set you back $3.99.
The race to stage the first major Rocket League tournament is on.
