Developer FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco didn’t give many details when they shared the first image of the Elden Ring expansion. They only said that Shadow of the Erdtree is currently in development, with a picture of Miquella riding the spectral steed, Torrent, through a golden field with a blighted Erdtree on the horizon. Still, this was more than enough to get fans beyond excited.

Elden Ring released on Feb. 2022, and since then, it has earned worldwide acclaim from critics and players. The PlayStation 5 version currently has a Metascore of 96, and Elden Ring won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2022, surpassing The Last of Us Part 2 for the most GOTY awards in history. In terms of sales, it pushed 20 million units worldwide in just under a year.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise Elden Ring has garnered an enormous fanbase. Now, with a full expansion confirmed, players are eager to find out when it launches.

The release date for Shadow of the Erdtree hasn’t been confirmed. There are also no official details about its content beyond what’s seen in the teaser image, which sparked fan theories of the DLC being a prequel featuring Miquella, a character frequently mentioned in Elden Ring who never properly appears in-person.

In December 2023, speculation spread that Shadow of the Erdtree would drop in February 2024, thanks to a leaked promotion for an Elden Ring collab with controller maker Thrustmaster. This would line up nicely with Elden Ring’s second anniversary. Figure designer PureArts also intends to release its first Elden Ring collectible that same month, which lends further credence to the idea that Bandai Namco plans to celebrate Elden Ring‘s anniversary with a DLC launch.

In addition, a patch for Elden Ring released on Jan. 11. Despite Bandai Namco stressing that the patch doesn’t contain any new content, more than a few fans believe it’s preparing for the upcoming DLC.
