Wordle game help: 5-letter words with ‘A’ and ‘D’

Pay attention to where each letter is placed.

Wordle has slowly become one of the most popular games on the internet, thanks to its simplicity and strong social factor. Each day, it will pick a different five-letter word, which players must guess in up to six tries and under 24 hours. Words are always part of the English language and always the same for anyone on the same calendar day, but that is all you know prior to entering your first guess.

The only clues you get are the letters themselves, changing colors after each try in a code inspired by classic game Mastermind: green if they’re in the right place, yellow if they’re in the wrong place but still part of the word, and gray if they’re not part of the word at all. That information allows you to slowly figure out what the answer is.

After you find it or run out of guesses, you can share your progress on social media through aesthetically-pleasing grids of colored square emojis, which represent each of your guesses on that day.

On most days, longtime Wordle players should have no trouble finding the answer to the puzzle with the right strategy and starting words. But sometimes, after a couple of guesses, you might feel like you’re still far from figuring out what the word of the day might be. Maybe you found one or two letters and need some inspiration to make your next guess count.

If that is the case today and you found an “A” and a “D” somewhere in your word, check out the list and guide below, which should help you out.

The key to narrowing down the list is paying attention to where the letters are. If you don’t know where the “A” and “D” you found before are yet (green box), at the very least you know one place they are not (yellow box). As you try to find that information, use combinations of “A” and “D” with some of the most common letters in the alphabet, like “E,” “L,” “R,” and “T.”

Try not to repeat letters that came out gray in your previous guesses, because repeating them will not give you any new information.

You can make combinations like “TREAD” or “SCALD,” for example.

Even if that does not give you that much inspiration, you still get closer to finding the Wordle answer by elimination as more letters are ruled out.

If you’re still unsure and don’t want to wait until Wordle resets at midnight local time, you can always look up the answer to today’s puzzle (which we update around 12am CT).
