The roster of playable characters that players can recruit in Genshin Impact is ever-expanding which is one of the strongest drawing points that keep Travelers consistently coming back for more. Although he has yet to officially be released, Lyney was one of the very first characters unveiled for the RPG and has had many leaks uncovered regarding his upcoming debut.
While future characters are usually uncovered by the Genshin leak community, Lyney is a rare exception that was first unveiled by miHoYo itself. He is among a select few characters that appeared in the spoiler video that the developers shared right around the time that Genshin officially launched called “Teyvat Chapter Storyline Preview: Travail.”
Although it will still be some time before Lyney officially debuts since Fontaine is at least a month away from releasing, a lot of information has already been uncovered which means that Travelers can already begin thinking about whether they want to add him to their roster.

Who is Lyney in Genshin Impact?
Lyney is a confirmed playable character arriving with the Fontaine update in Genshin. He first appeared on Sep. 27, 2020 in the spoiler trailer alongside another character named Lynette. Genshin characters usually aren’t teased together, so the unique way this duo was depicted together had most members of the community wondering if they would somehow function as a new type of two-in-one playable character.
While this prospect had players excited, the duo has since been confirmed as two distinct playable characters. Their abilities do echo and complement each other though, so there are at least some special visual ties between them that players will get to experience as they play with them.

Although Lyney and Lynette were originally believed to be a sibling duo and perhaps twins, the devs surprised players by revealing that they also had another sibling on July 3. This sibling is Freminet, another upcoming playable character arriving in the Fontaine update.
Because of this, Lyney is part of Teyvat’s first playable sibling trio. Lyney and Lynette are a magician duo that regularly put on a magic show as players might guess based on their outfits and based on the “Overture Teaser: The Final Feast” that showcased them performing onstage for the notorious Fatui Harbinger Arlecchino. Their younger sibling Freminent prefers to stay out of the spotlight.
When he’s onstage performing, Lyney is perceived as an impressive magician by all. But when he’s offstage, “he’s a reliable older brother, courteous visitor, and devoted friend.”

Lyney will wield a bow into battle. The signature weapon arriving with him has also been leaked and is called “The First Great Magic.”
What is Lyney’s element in Genshin Impact?
Lyney was officially confirmed as a Pyro character by miHoYo when they shared his official artwork on July 3. Before this, most leaks had also said that he would be a Pyro character so many players were already expecting him to be.
Lyney officially being a Pyro Bow character makes him the third Pyro bow character to arrive in Teyvat. The other recruits of this type are Amber, a four-star who is generally regarded as one of Genshin’s weakest characters, and Yoimiya, a five-star who is a solid primary damage dealer. Neither recruit is generally ranked among Genshin’s best characters, so it will certainly be interesting to see how Lyney performs in comparison.
Lyney’s gameplay in Genshin Impact
Based on what has been seen of his powerful Pyro skillset and his signature weapon, Lyney appears to be a DPS unit. It’s tough to tell exactly how we will function until the details of his exact abilities are revealed, but players do at least already have an idea of how his skills play out on the battlefield.

The Pyro Bow character will be a five-star unit. This means that Lyney will have his own special featured banner, although the name of this banner has not been revealed just yet.

Lyney is officially a Fontaine character but this doesn’t mean that he actually originates from there and many players are already wondering if he has ties to another region. There has been a lot of speculation that Lyney might instead be from Arlecchino’s orphanage which would mean he is instead from the Cryo region of Snezhnaya, but so far this seems to just be community speculation based on the “Overture Teaser: The Final Feast” trailer.
When will Lyney release in Genshin Impact?
Thanks to miHoYo’s spoiler video from 2020, which is where Lyney was first teased, players have known for years that he would be arriving at some point during the Fontaine wave of updates in Genshin. Fontaine is the Hydro region of Teyvat in Genshin and is set to be the next region that players venture to based on miHoYo’s already unveiled roadmap for the future of the RPG.
Lyney will officially arrive as the first featured five-star recruit from Fontaine after the Version 4.0 update is launched. If everything stays on track, Fontaine should arrive around Aug. 16, 2023.
The Pyro character may either be a featured recruit for the first half of the update, which means he will become available as soon as the update launches, or in the second half of the update, which means players will need to wait around three weeks after it launches.
Based on the latest leaks and my experience with Genshin’s usual character debut patterns, it is highly probable that Lyney will arrive in the first half of the Version 4.0 update. Travelers who are hoping to add him to their roster should consider saving up soon as this means his debut is likely only a little over a month away.
