The whip is one of Indiana Jones’s most iconic elements, and in making the Great Circle, the developer MachineGames went to great lengths to ensure that it felt and sounded right.

During the Xbox Gamescom showcase on Aug. 23, Axel Torvenius, creative director of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Jens Andersson, design director, spoke about how Indy’s whip was “incredibly important” to get right from day one. The team even visited a Swedish bullwhip champion to understand the whip better and used “rig mics” to get the sound right.

Torvenius highlighted that a “broad spectrum within the team” worked on creating the whip because there are so many parts to it, from physics to audio and animation. All these elements allow you to use the whip in different ways, like attaching it to the environment, pulling objects, using it to scale walls, and disarming enemies. Ahead of Gamescom, Torvenius also revealed the developer set up scenarios in the game that allow you to use the whip in a “cool way.”

Aside from the whip, you can expect a lot of authenticity in Indiana Jones, including Easter eggs you can discover throughout the game. However, even if you are new to the franchise, MachineGames has been working closely with LucasFilm Games to create a true Indiana Jones experience regardless.

Once Indiana Jones and the Great Circle releases on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and, later, PS5, a “fantastic world of deep narrative and adventure” will await everyone.
