Griffin earned their fourth-consecutive win of the 2019 LCK Spring Split earlier today against DAMWON Gaming—and mid laner Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon completed his third deathless night of the year.
Facing off against the LCK’s hyped newcomers in DAMWON, Chovy displayed yet another instance of mid lane dominance, bringing his Spring Split KDA ratio to an unbelievable 84.
Although he admitted in the post-game interview that he’s “paying attention to [his KDA] a little bit,” Chovy assured fans that it isn’t his focus. “If there’s a situation where I have to die, I will die for my teammates,” Chovy said.
Despite having only one death in his past four LCK matches, Chovy hasn’t lowered his aggressiveness in the slightest. Instead, Chovy has the support of ever-present jungler Lee “Tarzan” Seung-yong, who’s ready to aid the mid laner at a moment’s notice.
With Tarzan as backup, Chovy had a field day in the mid lane against DAMWON—especially in the second game, where a two-vs-two skirmish ended with Chovy gaining two kills and double buffs. With these initial kills, Chovy took over the game, earning his second MVP award of the night.
But Chovy’s high KDA wasn’t the only highlight of this match. Game one saw Tarzan bust out his new innovation—Redemption jungle Olaf. “Tarzan told me he saw someone else going the Redemption build on solo queue, and he thought it was really good,” Chovy said when asked about Tarzan’s strange build. “In scrims, we were using Redemption a lot, and we thought it was pretty good, so we brought it out in competitive.”
Tarzan’s idea worked, with his tanky Redemption Olaf build becoming very effective by the mid game. Tarzan not only used his Redemption defensively, but also as an offensive tool, which helped garner Griffin kills and vision.
With DAMWON now thoroughly defeated, Griffin will prepare for their Jan. 31 bout against the SK Telecom T1 dream team—the match LCK fans everywhere have been waiting for.
