Gen.G announced on Thursday that it has re-signed two core players from the 2017 World Championship squad: Top laner Lee “CuVee” Seong-jin and bot laner Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk. The team is also bringing back two substitute players, including mid laner Song “Fly” Yong-jun and support Kim “Life” Jeong-min, who may step into bigger roles
CuVee and Ruler have grown into some of the best players at their positions in Korea. They’re now especially important after the team released their starting mid laner, lost both junglers, and saw star support Jo “CoreJJ” Yong-return to North America to play with Team Liquid.
Fly and Life will be called upon to plug some of those gaps. Fly actually played a lot for the team down the stretch of the 2018 season in the place of former starter Lee “Crown” Min-ho. It was a surprise when the team decided to leave him off the Worlds roster and instead brought both junglers to the event. His champion pool diversity and low-economy mid lane gave Gen.G options. With the departures that Gen.G has experienced, he’ll start the year as the sole man in the mid lane.
Life is a lesser-known quantity, but has big shoes to fill. Gen.G looked dead in the water two years ago before making the switch from Kwon “Wraith” Ji-min to CoreJJ. Life will be tasked with getting the most out of Ruler like CoreJJ did.
Now that Gen.G has filled every position except jungle, fans will eagerly await what the organization does there. One of the highest profile jungle free agents, former KINGZONE jungler Han “Peanut” Wang-ho, is still unsigned. There are rumors on Reddit that one team he’s considering is Gen.G. We’re not sure what it means that Gen.G made this announcement and excluded Peanut, but it’s safe to say that more than one fan base is awaiting his announcement with baited breath.
