Last weekend, KT Rolster took down Griffin to be crowned the 2018 LCK Summer Split champions. This means that KT Rolster earned a spot in the upcoming World Championship as Korea’s first seed.
Afreeca Freecs, the squad with the most championship points in Korea among the remaining nine teams, also qualified for the World Championship as Korea’s second seed.
With only one spot for a Korean team at the World Championship remaining, a few select squads will duke it out in the upcoming regional qualifier. The winner of the event gets that coveted final spot in the biggest League of Legends tournament of the year.
Here’s how to watch the Korean World Championship regional qualifier.
Stream
This year’s Korean regional qualifier will be produced entirely by SPOTV, with Chris “PapaSmithy” Smith and Brendan Valdes casting the whole event. Viewers can watch the SPOTV broadcast of the regional qualifier on Riot Games’ LCK-focused Twitch channel, in addition to their League esports YouTube channel. A separate Twitch stream will also be provided, which will run SPOTV’s native Korean broadcast.
Teams
This year’s regional qualifier will feature the four LCK teams with the most championship points who have yet to qualify for Worlds in a three-round tournament. The four LCK squads participating in the regional qualifier, in order of their tournament seed, include:
1) KINGZONE DragonX
2) Griffin
3) Gen G
4) SK Telecom T1
Schedule
This year’s regional qualifier will feature three different matches, spread across three separate days. The regional qualifier will begin on Sept. 12, with the two following rounds being played on Sept. 14 and 16. Each round of the regional qualifier will begin at 5pm KST or 3am CT.
Format
Similar to the recently-concluded LCK playoffs, this year’s regional qualifier features a gauntlet system, where the participating teams are seeded into different rounds based on their championship points.
SKT and Gen G, the two teams with the lowest amount of championship points at 30, will play in the first round of the regional qualifier. The winner will move on to the second round where Griffin are waiting. The winner of the second round will then advance to the regional qualifier finals, where they’ll face the LCK Spring Split champions, KINGZONE, for the final spot at Worlds.
All of the matches in the regional qualifier will be played as a best-of-five series. SKT and Gen G’s first-round bout will begin on Sept. 12 at 3am CT.
