“POP/STARS,” the debut song of Riot Games’ virtual K-POP group K/DA, was met with rave reviews and millions of YouTube hits. It was released on Nov. 3 during the opening ceremony of the League of Legends World Championship finals. K/DA’s “POP/STARS” broke the record for the most viewed K-POP group debut music video in 24 hours with an unbelievable five million views.

The record was previously held by IZ*ONE, whose debut music video “La Vie en Rose” garnered four and a half million views in the first 24 hours after its release, according to the K-POP record-keeping YouTube channel, kpophyung.

K/DA is composed of the League of Legends champions Kai’Sa, Akali, Evelynn, and Ahri, all of whom have K/DA themed in-game skins. Lending their voices to the champions for the music video are American pop artists Madison Beers and Jaira Barns, as well as Cho “Miyeon” Mi-yeon and Jeon “Soyeon” So-yeon, who are part of the K-POP group (G)I-DLE. Beers and Barns voice Evelynn and Kai’Sa, while Miyeon and Soyeon voice Ahri and Akali.

The four artists performed “POP/STAR” live at the opening ceremony for last weekend’s World Championship final between China’s Invictus Gaming and Europe’s Fnatic. Accompanying the singers were their in-game counterparts, who all made their debut performance thanks to Riot’s AR technology. During the opening ceremony, Riot screened the music video  on one of the venue’s jumbotron monitors.

With the massive success of “POP/STAR,” it’s hard to believe that Riot won’t produce more musical content in the future.
