When Prestige Blood Moon Aatrox was revealed last month, it stirred an uproar from fans in the official League of Legends Reddit community. Players were complaining that it felt less exclusive, rare, or special, and that they felt less rewarded for grinding out the event to earn it.
After about a week, the noise produced by those fans died out, and now, Aatrox’s Prestige skin is coming out sometime during this week’s patch without any significant change. Another Prestige skin was revealed yesterday for Vayne, however, and it seems the outrage has kicked up once again, this time gaining a bit more traction. Two posts have reached the front page of the League Reddit community today totaling at over 7,600 upvotes combined.
This time, however, the complaints aren’t aimed at how special the players feel from the skin. Well, not entirely. They’re definitely still complaining about that. But this time, they’re also complaining about the direct design of the skin, which, to us, seems like more of a valid argument.
When we wrote about the Prestige Aatrox complaints, we noted that grinding these events was totally voluntary, and that the purpose of them wasn’t to feel special and super unique every single time. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise us to see one for every single event, because the real reason behind them seems to just be to give someone that mains a specific champion a reason to grind toward something exclusive once in a while. The goal shouldn’t be to grind toward every single Prestige skin, unless being a completionist alone makes you feel satisfied.
As for the design of the new Prestige Firecracker Vayne skin, however, fans are saying it leaves a lot to be desired. They’re hoping the quality of the skin improves rather than a reduction in how often Prestige skins are made. League news site the Rift Herald, for instance, wrote today that both Prestige Aatrox and Vayne seem lackluster when compared to both Prestige K/DA skins.
The main argument there is that these two newer skins seem more like recolors or chromas rather than unique skins, but it’s important to note that we don’t actually know how to unlock the new ones yet. If they’re considerably easier to unlock, that would explain the perceived drop in quality.
Either way, Riot hasn’t responded to these rather recent complaints just yet, but as it’s not rare for a Riot staffer to hop on Reddit to address concerns, we wouldn’t be surprised if they did so soon.
