Origen will be joining Fnatic and H2K Gaming as the representatives of Europe at the upcoming League of Legends World Championships after taking first place at the European Regional Qualifiers today.
The good news for Origen comes on the heels of a 2-3 loss in the European finals last week against Fnatic.
This year’s qualification process was different than in the past. The second and third place finishers are no longer guaranteed a spot at Worlds. Instead, the invites include the Summer Split champions (Fnatic), the team with the most Championship Points between the two splits (H2K), and the winner of the regional qualifiers, aka the Gauntlet.
Origen defeated both Unicorns of Love and ROCCAT in its run through the gauntlet. ROCCAT put up a good fight, taking the Origen squad to five games before bowing out. Unicorns of Love, however, didn’t put up quite the same fight. Origen stomped them in a 3-0 victory.
It’s been quite the rookie season for Origen. Enrique “xPeke” Cedeño Martínez formed the team after he left Fnatic last year. He was joined by Spanish player Alfonso “mithy” Aguirre Rodriguez who help scout and build the team. The two ended up recruiting other pros Maurice “Amazing” Stückenschneider and Paul “sOAZ” Boyer, as well solo queue star Jesper “Niels” Svenningsen for the squad.
Origen was favored for success after its impressive run in the 2015 Spring Challenger Series. It ultimately defeated Copenhagen Wolves Academy in the finals of the series, leading to an auto-qualification into the League Championship Series.
The groups for Worlds have yet to be drawn. The event begins on Oct. 1 in Paris, France at Les Docks de Paris.
