There is a new top-dog in the Riot Games ranks, with the company creating the role of chairman of the League Championship Series (LCS) and appointing Dustin “RedBeard” Beck—but what exactly is his new job?
Beck was the vice president of esports and merchandise at Riot Games. He was regularly seen hoisting the Summoner’s Cup with the victors, and may be best-known amongst fans for leading the typically awkward awards ceremonies.
With the LCS being the premiere competition in western League of Legends, you would think he would have a lot of responsibility, but Beck says the part-time role will actually see him take a step back from the esports side of things.
“I’m handing off overall leadership of the LCS and Riot esports to an amazing team co-led by Whalen ‘RiotMagus’ Rozelle and Jarred ‘Bradmore’ Kennedy,” he said in a post on lolesports.com. “I’ll be sticking around to offer mentorship and guidance to the senior team; I’ll also be working with them on some strategic projects coming down the pipeline that’ll have a big impact on LoL esports.”
Beck also mentioned that he will be creating his own start-up “within the investment world.” No further details were added, but it is likely the reason for the lighter workload and step back from being the face of Riot esports.
Rozelle and Kennedy are no strangers to esports. Rozelle has been involved in the Riot Games esports team for over four years, while Kennedy is the current director of merchandise at the company. The two will now have lead control over the direction of the league.
