Former Counter Logic Gaming coach and Dignitas team captain William “Scarra” Li is eyeing a return to competitive League of Legends. Li has recently been scrimmaging with Counter Logic Gaming Black as they search for a new mid laner for the upcoming Challenger Series Summer Split.
Li has publicly indicated his desire to return to the competitive scene. “I’ve been scrimming with some teams lately to see if I’d like to get back into competitive,” he said on his stream on May 7. Shortly after, he began scrimming with the Challenger side of the organization he had parted ways with as a head coach less than a month prior.
Since his practice time with Counter Logic Gaming Black, he has actively scrimmed against other top tier Challenger series teams, including Frank Fang Gaming, TuringB (the team owned by pharmaceutical multi-millionaire Martin Shkreli), Team Coast’s new hybrid roster Coast Five, as well as the main Counter Logic Gaming squad.
In a statement to the Daily Dot, CLG Black manager Samantha “Samy” Elias confirmed the accuracy of the screengrabs:
“It’s true, we’re trying him out. But nothing is official. Not even him coming back to competitive is official, he’s just testing the waters to see whether it’s something he wants to do full time, on the side, or not at all. We’d be more than happy to have him on our team, but as of right now it’s just a trial run.”
The legendary player stepped down from Team Dignitas as a competitive player on March 25, 2014, transitioning to a coaching role for the team. After an unfortunate fifth place finish in the North American League of Legends Championship Series playoffs last year, Li and top laner Darshan “ZionSpartan” Upadhyaha moved to Counter Logic Gaming.
Things didn’t fare well after the move, however. Counter Logic finished fifth-sixth in the playoffs this Spring. Li stepped down from the head coach position on April 17 and has since been exploring his options.
