Every time you hear “Faker, what was that?!” you know exactly what you’re about to see. If you’re a League of Legends esports fan, you’ve probably seen this play a hundred times, because it’s probably the game’s most famous play of all time.
Of course, we’re talking about the Zed mirror match-up between SK Telecom T1’s Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok and KT Bullets’ Yoo “Ryu” Sang-wook, and today is its five-year anniversary. By the look on Ryu’s face, he probably wants to forget about it, but nevertheless, here it is for probably the 101st time.
There are other incredibly well-known plays in League’s history, like the backdoor from Enrique “xPeke” Cedeño Martínez at IEM Katowice in 2013 and the Hail Mary Ashe arrow from Kim “PraY” Jong-in at Worlds in 2016. The Zed-on-Zed Faker outplay takes the cake in our minds, though. It’s incredibly hard to follow and a display of pure skill. In other words, it’s peak Faker.
We were able to see a little bit of the old Faker at the Asian Games over the past week, where he was able to carry South Korea through the group stage without dropping a single game. Sure, China was the victorious team at the end of the finals, but it was a great reminder that Faker is still one of the world’s best players.
